Sitting on a scenic mountainside, this cozy, modern mountain cabin is affectionately referred to by our clients as “The Cabin” and is designed for comfort, stunning views, and sustainability. In the early phases, we worked through the design goals with our client to understand what they wanted to have included in their custom cabin design. The results are an open floor plan that allows for the family to gather and windows over expansive decks that frame breathtaking mountain views. A wrap-around porch and decks extend the living space outdoors and provide more gathering spaces. These decks were strategically designed to address the challenge of the high winds at this location. The winds atop the mountain pose similar challenges to coastal winds, which informed our structural design of the decks. Another goal was to add solar panels to the roof, so the orientation to capture both the views and ensure a roof form that allowed for solar took careful planning. Overall, the main goal of this cabin on the mountain and all the critical design details came back to being able to create a place to just relax and enjoy creation from a comfortable and accessible home.
PROJECT LOCATION: Crozet, Virginia CONTRACTOR: JW Smith, Inc. PHOTOGRAPHY: Gaines Group Architects
This luxury, neo-classical home in Crozet, Virginia was designed with an eye towards Jefferson’s Academical Village style. Our client wanted a formal brick home with classic details and connections from inside to outside. The many porch spaces allow for parties to flow out to enjoy the incredible views, and the interior frames the views through oversized windows. The intricate cornice details and attention to brickwork give the home a distinctive charm that is not found in most new homes.

The Old Farm Road Renovation was a traditional ranch home when we arrived that had not been updated in decades. Our goal was to modernize the home and adapt it into a lifetime home. The features desired included an open kitchen and living space that had lots of light and access to the rear courtyard. We also wanted to add an in-law suite while improving the overall aesthetics. The homeowner needed a larger master suite and an interior pool for therapy. The existing house was neglected and had considerable termite damage which added to the renovation complications. We worked hard with the homeowner to develop a home that fit the neighborhood, addressed their aesthetic goals, and included all the amenities desired. The end result is an incredible home that allows for entertaining, quiet contemplation, formal and informal gatherings, and the ability to have live-in care.

CasaCielo is perched on the top of the property, and the views are magical. This home was carefully placed so that the connections to the site inside to outside were framed to capture nature’s beauty as the seasons pass. Glass wraps around the home on three sides from floor to ceiling blending the in-between spaces. The warm wood tones, high ceilings, and modest forms allow the site to be a celebration and the home to be a refuge. With a kitchen on one side of the living space, the home is anchored to the site, the morning views tell the story of the day while the functional spaces are all allocated to the rear of the building. Our clients have beautifully complimented the architecture with just the right furniture and fabrics.
