Snow on the Roof – Building Science Analysis

The snow is falling this morning with ice expected tonight. This is an excellent time to look at your roof to find out where the heat is escaping from your home. Look for areas on your roof that are melting faster than others and also compare your roof to the neighbor’s roof with the same solar orientation. The areas that melt faster show where you need to add insulation / air seal your attic. This will usually happen the quickest as temperatures rise, so for this storm, tomorrow.

Identifying the leaks in your thermal envelope will give you the appropriate information to know where to focus your attention to reduce your monthly electric bills. As you know, heat rises and without the appropriate air sealing measures and insulation in the attic, the snow on your roof will melt faster than in other locations.
