Massanutten Custom Home

We are closing in on the finish of this beautiful new home at Massanutten Resort. This custom home captures the views of the slopes, provides lots of outdoor gathering opportunities, and feels comfortable. When we started the design process for this project we had a clear direction and a solid budget. As we worked through out design process, listening to our client, the design goals emerged. As with most lots at Massanutten Resort, the grade and lot size offer some challenges. We used those to create some opportunities for a striking architectural solution.

Working with Beck Builders the execution of the design has created a bright and welcoming space for playing, gathering, and building memories. I am thrilled with the interior finishes that our client worked out with our talented interior designer, Jarod. The vibrant pops of color exactly match our clients vibrant personality. The large expanses of glass on the front open the house up and connect you to the beauty that surrounds the house.

While we worked through the design using renderings to make sure spaces met the goals, the final product exceeded our aesthetic expectations. It is simply stunning.

Meet Lindsey Kohler-Austin: Your New Point of Contact

Meet Lindsey Kohler-Austin: Your New Point of Contact

Lindsey Kohler-Austin

We’re thrilled to introduce Lindsey Kohler-Austin, who has joined our team as Office Manager and will be your primary point of contact for all client needs. With her extensive background in banking and a genuine passion for creativity, Lindsey brings both professional expertise and fresh perspective to our firm.

Lindsey comes to us with years of experience in the banking industry, where she honed her skills in client relations and operational excellence. While her role as Office Manager doesn’t involve hands-on design work, she describes herself as “a creative at heart” and is excited to learn more about architecture and design. This combination of business acumen and creative curiosity makes her perfectly suited to bridge the gap between our design vision and your project needs.

One of Lindsey’s greatest passions is photography, particularly black and white film photography. She doesn’t just capture images, she processes and scans her film at home, demonstrating the same attention to detail and craftsmanship that we value in our architectural work. “I am really proud of my photography, and the skills I have learned over the years,” she shares. This artistic sensibility will serve her well in understanding and communicating the visual aspects of our architectural projects.

Originally from Kent, Ohio, Lindsey has called Harrisonburg home for almost 10 years. Her deep connection to our community aligns perfectly with our firm’s dedication to serving local clients. She knows this area well and understands the unique character that makes our region special.

When she’s not managing client relationships or exploring her photography hobby, Lindsey enjoys hiking, especially when there’s a photo opportunity involved. She lives locally with her boyfriend Josh, and they’re hoping to add some furry family members to their household soon. Her favorite entertainment spans from the heartwarming optimism of Ted Lasso to the nostalgic charm of 13 Going On 30 and the artistic beauty of Howl’s Moving Castle, a range that speaks to her appreciation for both human connection and visual storytelling.

Lindsey describes herself as “an open book,” and that transparency will be invaluable as she helps navigate your architectural journey with us. Whether you’re planning a new build, renovation, or simply exploring possibilities, Lindsey will be there to ensure clear communication, smooth processes, and exceptional service every step of the way.

We’re confident that Lindsey’s combination of professional experience, creative insight, and genuine care for client relationships will enhance your experience with our firm. She’s ready to help bring your architectural vision to life while maintaining the personal touch and community focus that has defined our practice for nearly four decades.

Welcome to the team, Lindsey!

August First Friday at the Depot featuring Derrick Chirinos!!

August First Friday at the Depot featuring Derrick Chirinos!!

Join us for First Friday Harrisonburg in August at the Depot on Friday, August 1st from 5pm – 7pm for the Exhibition “ICONS” by artist Derrick Chirinos!!

Derrick Chirino

As always, this event is free and open to everyone, and refreshments will be provided by Gaines Group Architects.
Series Name: Icons
Medium: Photography, Digital and Film
Artist Statement: In Icons, Derrick Chirinos swaps out live subjects for mannequin heads to capture the small, everyday moments we often take for granted. These silent figures live out ordinary routines: sipping coffee, taking a stroll, laughing with friends. Each scene becomes a time capsule, a reminder that our time on Earth is brief. As our planet’s protections waver and tomorrow feels more uncertain, these photographs stand as proof that at one point: we moved, laughed, and lived freely.

Artist Bio: Derrick Chirinos (He/Him), is a photographer and filmmaker local to the Harrisonburg area who sometimes attempts to control the chaos in his process and other times lets the art come to life on its own terms. Since expanding his skillset to processing and physically altering film to convey a moment in time, Derrick not only unlocked what he thought was possible in art but hopes to inspire others to think outside the image as well. Since 2019, he has exhibited in Brooklyn, NY, JMU, and at his alma mater Eastern Mennonite University.
*Accessibility Note: This building was previously restored from a fire. The elevator shaft is currently not functioning and there is an absence of ramps in the space. Because the show is on the 2nd floor, this may pose an issue for those who have mobility challenges. We are aware of this need and we apologize greatly if this changes your ability to attend.

This event is free and open to everyoneSnacks and refreshments will be served and we look forward to seeing you there!

Each month we host a new artist in our building’s 2nd floor gallery at the Chesapeake Western Depot at 141 W. Bruce St. (second floor entrance is on Chesapeake). Artwork will remain on exhibit through the month. Come view the show anytime and get a tour the Depot!

A new chapter for little learners, Harrisonburg Rockingham Child Day Care Center

The final phase of renovation has started at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Child Day Care Center, and there is excitement in the air. For over 50 years, the HRCDCC has been a cornerstone of the Harrisonburg community, offering licensed childcare on a sliding fee scale and ensuring quality care that is accessible to all families. This move brings them back to the heart of downtown and adds a new level of excitement and vibrance to Harrisonburg.

Historically, HRCDCC has operated out of local churches, which has been a true gift to the community. However, these shared spaces inherently limited their ability to meet growing needs, and they dreamed of having their own space. Through an amazingly successful fundraising initiative called “Dancing with the Stars of the ‘Burg,” they were able to raise funds to complete a Phase 1 renovation at 44 Federal Street in downtown Harrisonburg. Harrisonburg Construction partnered with the organization to gut and rehab an existing building, maximizing its functionality for childcare.

Phase 2 has kicked off and will bring some highly visible changes to the outside of the structure, including a new private playground. As “Dancing with the Stars of the ‘Burg” dancer’s company, Nielsen Builders, takes on this challenge, we are excited to see the changes coming. The curbs have been poured, and the strong foundation is in place for a vibrant play area. The work will also include upgraded energy-efficient windows and a new EIFS exterior. Another significant change will be the introduction of a front door that opens to the south.

Architecture that makes a splash

Architecture that makes a splash

Splash Grounds

Harrisonburg, get ready to make a splash! The Spray Grounds at Ralph Sampson Park have officially opened. This refreshing new amenity space in the Friendly City features 6,000 square feet of aquatic play area with four shade structures and a bathhouse. We had the honor of working for Nielsen Builders on this project and partnering with Southern Playground and Monteverde Studio for the complete design. This is yet another incredible project made possible for our community by Harrisonburg Parks and Rec. If you have not noticed their work around the city, you are not paying attention. Our parks are looking exceptional these days.

The Harrisonburg spray grounds are located in Ralph Sampson Park, next to the Lucy F. Simms Center, at the corner of Washington Street and Simms Avenue. This project, funded by ARPA money, provides the quadrant of the city with the most school-age children a very cool destination. It is accessible, with vibrant colors, and is surrounded by basketball courts and a playground. The project features a large bucket that dumps out and creates a huge splash, seating areas, restrooms, and lots of green space. The center is open from 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily and is free to the public.

Harrisonburg Spray Grounds

Our role in the project was not the cool water features, but we did get to provide design for the shade pavilions and the restrooms/pump house. This project was done design-build, which means we worked directly for the builder and not for the city. This approach allows for minimal design to verify code compliance and permit drawings.

Harrisonburg, get ready to make a splash! The highly anticipated Ralph Sampson Park Spray Grounds officially opened on Tuesday, July 1st, bringing a refreshing new amenity to the Friendly City. This 6,000-square-foot aquatic play area is unlike anything else in the region, promising endless summer fun for all ages.

Located conveniently beside the Lucy F. Simms Continuing Education Center at the corner of Washington Street and Simms Avenue, the spray grounds were made possible by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. This project is a testament to Harrisonburg’s commitment to providing vibrant, accessible recreational spaces for its community.
